Personal History Born in 2353 in a refugee colony on Valo III, Damian was not the first half Bajoran half Human child on that planet. His mother was also born there in 2328. His Bajoran grandparents had been off-world when the Cardassians formally annexed their homeworld. It was around 2327 that the first Bajorans started to settle on Valo III. It was a year after they arrived that they had their first child, Akorem Lorin.

In 2348 Federation relief convoys started to appear in the Valo system. They were bringing much-needed food, and prefab shelters. Once there were more shelters, it was easier to handle the constant influx of refugees. When the Federation Council approved the use of industrial replicators a permanent Starfleet contingent was stationed on the planet.

It was early 2351 that Lorin met her future husband, Erik. He was a Lieutenant Commander aboard the USS Fredrickson, an Excelsior class ship that Starfleet had ordered to remain in the Valo system. Erik was the commander in charge of the Starfleet ground forces on Valo III. They were married by the end of 2351. They were together for almost a year when Lorin fell pregnant with Damian. Due to Bajoran pregnancies only being 5 months, and Human pregnancies being 9, Lorin had to spend a lot of time with the doctors on Valo III. Damian was eventually born after 6 and a half months of pregnancy. Fortunately, for Lorin, there were no abnormalities for both mother and son. With Bajoran naming conventions of the family name being first, Lorin and Erik compromised, thus Damian’s family name was Akorem and was placed after his first name, in human naming terms.

He spent most of his childhood around Bajorans. He did know some humans, most of whom were personal friends of his father, who was also human. With Bajoran DNA being the dominant DNA, he has fully formed Bajoran ridge. It was during this time that his father Erik requested, and was granted extended leave, with his new family on Valo III. As luck would have it his grandfather, on his father’s side, was a Captain in Starfleet. Captain David Graffam was captain of the USS Nightowl, which was one of the ships that brought in replacement crews for the replicator stations. The relief crew ships often remained in orbit while crews were transferred. This gave David the chance to spend time with his grandchild. Over the next few years, Erik grew more and more accustomed to life planetside with his family. He eventually requested an extended leave of absence so he could stay with his family on Valo III for the foreseeable future.

When Damian was 10, in 2373, Erik recalled back to Starfleet, following the declaration of war on the Federation by the Dominion. Valo being close to Dominion space was fortunately spared from the devastation of the war, plus with the signing of a nonaggression pact between Bajor and the Dominion, this helped ensure the safety of the Valo system. The Starfleet personnel on the planets were recalled, and the replicators removed, however, they were a lot more self-sufficient now, especially considering that they had converted large amounts of arable land into crops, which was more than enough to feed the 8000 people on Valo II and the 30000+ people who lived on Valo III.

Several years later Damian was 17 and wanted to join Starfleet. He had seen what the devastation of the war had done to the galaxy. He retained close ties with his grandfather David and had seen what the war had done to him. David retired in 2375 after the war. Early in 2380 Damian applied to Starfleet Academy and was accepted. It was during his first year at the Academy that he started taking a liking to the different martial arts of different planets, during self-defense classes. During his first year in the academy, he developed his skills in the operations area. His father was Chief Operations officer of the USS Fredrickson, so it seemed fitting that Damian would walk in his father’s footsteps. When self-defense teachers mentioned that he had a future in security, he responded that he had no interest in security.

His second and third years were uneventful, however, his fourth year he was the one he excelled in most. He, his academy instructors mentioned, had a future in the command track, if he could become more consistently patient. He, of course, knew he had this problem, and often tried to contain it.

In 2384, he graduated from the academy. He was given his first assignment. He was assigned as a junior operations officer on the USS Nightowl. The newly promoted Ensign Akorem enjoyed this position, especially given that he was on his grandfather’s old ship. It was now commanded by a Captain Cala Greystone, his grandfather’s old XO, and friend of the Graffam/Akorem family. Following a year of more relief work to world devastated by the war, he was promoted to Lt JG and offered a position of senior operations officer on the USS Sacrifice, a newly commissioned Norway class ship, dedicated to the people who gave their lives during the war, commanded by Captain Lon Barim, a Betazoid.

He served aboard the Sacrifice for 2 years, during which Captain Barim continually praised him. Eventually, an opportunity came, in the form of Magellan, as an operations officer. While not a promotion in rank, he had always wanted to serve aboard a Galaxy Class ship. Though Captain Barim was disappointed, he wouldn’t hold Damian back, so let him go.
