Change of Assignment

397 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Rude Awakening
Location: Starbase 121

"I can't go another round, sir."

Roget stared into the eyes of Lieutenant Harold Winton. The younger man was the starbase's senior communications officer. And an amateur wrestler, much like Roget. Winton had asked Roget for some practice and he had been more than willing to school the junior officer.

"I'm surprised you lasted this long," Roget admitted. "You're not bad kid. But I was doing this years before you were born. Keep at it."

"Commander del Rosario?" a youthful female voice inquired.

Roget turned at the mention of his name to see that one of his security officers, an Ensign Fern Larkspur, was standing in the doorway of the expansive gym.

"Yes Ensign," Roget said, hoping to prompt the young woman to say her piece. He had a reputation for being rough around the edges, grumpy even. It was a reputation he did not agree with. He recognized that his serious demeanor gave others a certain impression. He just didn't care.

"Admiral Stoank wants to see you in his office."

=====

That had been nearly a week ago. Admiral Stoank had given del Rosario his new orders. He was due to report to Deep Space 11 to begin duty on the USS Black Hawk as Chief of Security.

Since that meeting, Roget had busied himself with training the new Security Chief for SB121, a Saurian with zero experience on a starbase. With that training completed, Roget was finally ready to depart for the Gamma Quadrant, and DS11.

=====

He arrived on DS11 only to find that the Black Hawk was still out on a mission. He volunteered to work shifts in the station, but was rebuffed. Instead, he spent his time on weight training and wrestling. He'd found several good sparring partners, including a hefty Andorian spice merchant who kept quarters on DS11. The two of them had had some intense skirmishes over the last five days.

Although he truly loved his physical activities, he longed for duty. Fortunately, the Black Hawk finally arrived. The crew had largely been given leave while the DS11 engineering teams worked to bring the Akira-class ship back to top-of-the-line condition.

Roget was able to schedule a meeting with Geisler. He later found out that the Captain had been taking leave and gave up some of that time off to meet with the Security Chief.
