417 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Rude Awakening
Location: USS Black Hawk - Crew Quarters

Doctor Parisa Rykov's cat like eyes gently peaked over the thin PaDD she been holding near her face, her eyes catching a glimpse of her cat sitting on the chair across the room, staring at her intently. “What” she said sternly in a slightly agitated tone. “Do not give me that look. We both know you've had your dinner” she added as she put her PaDD down and continued the intense starring match between Krampus, her feline companion and herself. “Krampus, go to sleep” she said glaring at the cat who was letting out some purring noises from across the room.

She had a much better relationship with her cat than she had with any other human, or person in general, species and sex regardless. Doctor Rykov knew what the cat really wanted. It was so much food as it was a the warmth and distraction. “Oh you'll be the death of me” said Rykov as she got up from her sofa and headed towards the food replicator. “One ball of yarn” ordered Rykov, soon picking up a large turquiose ball of yarn and rolling it on the floor. Krampus sneaking up behind it and pouncing on top of it, playing with it and disemboweling the ball of yarn.

“One Chai tea, hot” she added, ordering herself a nice mug of hot tea. The warm and alluring aroma of cardamon quickly filled the room. Rykov took the mug with her over to the sofa, sat down and took a few sips before returning to her PaDD. The engineer was usually one to work well into the early hours of the morning, long after her last shift in order to get a jump start on her next shift's work. This evening, however, she was taking things light and reading for pleasure rather than for profession.

A few pleasant meows, and Rykov felt the light pressure of Krampus launching himself up onto the sofa and stretching out across her lap. The cat began to kneed her lap and Rykov gently ran her hand down the cat's back. “Such a spoiled thing you are” she said to the cat as it let out several purring noises, closing it's eyes partially to show that it was comfortable and happy. Rykov spent another hour reading her novel, the tale of a Xenexian warrior prince who felt for a simple Ba'ku woman, a complete work of fiction, but an enchanting romantic tale nonetheless. Soon, the Doctor and her cat were both sound asleep.
