A New Dawn

Posted on 16 Feb 2016 @ 9:13pm by Captain Harvey Geisler

588 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Outbreak
Location: USS Black Hawk || Geisler's Quarters
Timeline: MD 1 || 1900 hours

Harvey stared out the window of his quarters at the giant rock formerly owned by the Dominion. One would have thought that Starbase Unity would have been a pleasant place to walk around and enjoy some fresh air. Perhaps if it too hadn't suffered from a brutal Consortium attack, that would have been possible.

But then again, how appealing could a Dilithium Mine be?

Captain Geisler sighed before finally deciding to make the log entry he'd been avoiding. "Computer, access my logbook and start a new entry."

The computer beeped and chirped in reply. "New log entry has been created. Recording."

Harvey cleared his throat, "Captain's Log, Stardate 65498.0.

"It seems an eternity has passed since the events in the Gavara system. I wish circumstances aboard the Black Hawk had returned to normal, but it seems the Consortium has done more damage than anyone could have thought. No one walks the corridors alone any more. Those that do, well... they look over their shoulders often.

"Not that I blame them. Months ago, I saw what one person could do to cripple the Black Hawk. I wish I'd learned my lesson then. Maybe I wouldn't have been shot."

Harvey took a moment to feel where the phaser burn had once been on his side. The physical wound was long gone, but the pain still remained.

"Commander del Rosario has been turned over to Deep Space 11 pending criminal charges. Lieutenant Bast, as Doctor Kij has proven he was not acting under his own control, is remaining on board. Frankly, I don't know how I feel about that. If the Task Force wasn't so understaffed, I'd insist on a transfer."

He sighed, looking once more out the window. "According to Doctor Kij, I'l still off duty myself. Though that's not going to stop Commodore O'Connell from visiting tomorrow. I can't say I'm excited to see the face of a man I was assigned to hunt down. Or talk about the fact that I kept his wife and command crew locked away in the brig for several hours. I'm sure that's going to go over well."

Harvey considered for a moment entering in the log that, given the circumstances, the crew of the O'Carroll was released from the brig and escorted to Starbase Unity, along with the convoy that was scheduled to deliver its cargo to Gavara. Whatever medical supplies had been aboard the convoy were delivered to Gavara, however. Even though Harvey was off-duty at that time as well, he insisted that that be done. The Consortium may be able to reach far and wide, but given their size of their representation on the Black Hawk, Harvey assumed there could not be that many actual agents working for them.

He stood and walked over to the replicator and ordered a steaming cup of Darjeeling.

"Commander Kos has been granted medical leave. I'm told a temporary XO will be assigned to me in the morning." Harvey took a sip of the tea, letting its warmth bring a mild amount of comfort to his body. "Heaven help his or her soul."

Harvey turned and looked once more out the window. Commodore O'Connell's arrival really only meant one thing. The Black Hawk would not get a reprieve, and would soon be sent back out on an assignment. Given the Consortium's recent actions, Harvey's thought would have been deemed logical by any Vulcan's standard.

"Or, perhaps, heaven should help the five-hundred plus souls on this ship..."

He lowered his tea onto the saucer. "Computer, end log."
