The Sound of Silence

Posted on 12 Mar 2016 @ 11:43pm by Senior Chief Petty Officer Mila Rasputin

691 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Outbreak
Location: Personal Quarters

Mila sat in her quarters with Chow curled up on the back of her couch and let her eyes look out the port window as the stars drifted past the Black Hawk. She let her mind drift back to the visit that she had with Captain Geisler in sickbay and wondered what bothered the Captain so much that he could not seem to reciprocate a simple gesture...or even a complex one couched in hidden layers.

"You are a enlisted person, Mila Anastasia," she told herself. "A Starfleet Captain has no desire to lower themselves. They do not get to such a position by going for less. Stop wasting your time and find one who will be happy with what you have to offer."

Still, she reached over to the coffee table and picked up a PADD which displayed an image of the Captain and sighed again. "I am wasting my time," she said. "I should have known better." Her finger hovered over the image for a moment before she deleted it. "Never again shall I lift my voice in song for him, but in the tones of a seasoned Yeoman who knows her place in the scheme of things."

Mila set the PADD down and looked back out the window and felt a hint of anger settle into her which she despised, and contrary to what she had just said, she began to sing in her native Russian.

"Здравствуйте, темноты, мой старый друг
Я пришел, чтобы поговорить с вами снова
Потому что видение мягко ползучая
Осталось это семена, пока я спал
И видение, которое было посажено в моем мозгу
По-прежнему остается в пределах звук тишины

В беспокойных снах я ходил самостоятельно
Узкие улицы булыжником
'Neath

When she finished the song, she stood up and went to the replicator. "One Russian coffee, hot," she said, hoping the synth vodka the replicator gave her in it would help dull the anger she felt. She took a deep drink of it and felt the burn of the synthehol as it went down her throat and settle in her stomach. "Da, is not bad, but I think that perhaps I will need to visit Talons if I wish the real thing."

As she settled back down on the couch, Chow came awake and gave a hoot at her. "So my little friend awakens, does he?" she asked him with a smile. "It is good to know there is someone who appreciates without question of what I can do for him. Perhaps I will schedule some holodeck time for us and teach you some more moves."

Chow, for his part jumped from the back of the couch and into her lap to look up at her eagerly.

"I know," Mila said. "And I promise you this time that you will get the infamous Kong Vault and show everyone that you are better than the King Kong of stories." Chow gave a happy hoot and settled down in her lap, and together, they enjoyed the sound of silence.

1 - Russian, translation=:
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left it's seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp

When my eyes were stabbed
By the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening

People writing songs
That voices never share
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools" said I, "you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon God they made
And the sign flashed out it's warning
And the words that it was forming

And the sign said
"The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls"
And whispered in the sound of silence
