Step It Up

1,953 words; about a 10 minute read

Mission: Risky Business
Location: Security
Timeline: MD 1 1230 Hours

Once she was back in the Security office, Camila realized that her shift was almost over and tapped her combadge. =^=Lieutenant Cooper, Lieutenant Summers and Petty Officer Hanson to Security=^= she called as she pulled up the personnel files of all active Security personnel and began to look them over.

Samantha was in her quarters just getting settled and her comm badge went off, "=/\= On my way =/\=" She dropped her things inside the door and went back out. She saw the change in the environment from Starbase to starship but it gave her a very nice feeling. Back to something that goes places rather than stuck on a base that doesn't go anywhere but each to their own, she'd serve on a starship any day, her sister is the opposite. She continued to the turbo lift, "Security deck", the lift ascended.

Cooper was in a delicate position, she was rehanging a picture in her quarters when it slipped so she moved to catch it only to accidentally hit a PADD off her desk. So there she stood holding the picture as her one foot was stretched out and level, the PADD balanced precariously on it. That's just when her commbadge went off. She replied, =/\="Yes, no problem, on my way...." Then proceeded to gracefully draw her one foot toward her with the PADD on it as the other foot and leg kept perfect balance. She set the picture and PADD down on her desk and headed out, wondering it it could be this time. It was never good when she called everyone together.

Samantha then arrived at the office and stopped at the doors, "Senior chief Petty Officer Hanson......chief of the boat." She said to the door with the security seal on both doors. The doors parted and Samantha walked in.

Camila waited until the others showed up and nodded to Catherine as she entered, then looked at Hanson. "You would be Senior Chief Petty Officer Hanson?" she asked.

Catherine returned the nod and nodded to SCPO Hanson.

As she saw both officers, she stood to attention and checked the rank insignia, "Ma'am *nods* and ma'am, Senior Chief Hanson, Chief of the Boat. *turns to the security officer* Found me on the list?......good. *turns back to the two lieutenants* Just got aboard as well?, how are things?"

"Senior Chief Petty Officer," Camila said. "I am Lieutenant Di Pasquale, the Chief of Security and this is Lieutenant Catherine Cooper, my Assistant Chief of Security. I saw that you had just came aboard and while we normally conduct one on one's with new arrivals, our imminent departure and preparations have forced us to put protocol aside for the moment do to the lack of time. Tell me something about your past that I can't read in your file."

Samantha was put in a position where she didn't want to be considering what has happened to her but she'll try to keep it sweet and control whatever rumours follow thereafter, "Ohhh there's not much to tell. Father was a kind person. He was in starfleet as a major at the time, when I was a child, Daddy Hanson would come in all sharp and bushy tailed. He was a base commander at the time and when he left for work, my mother would take me to the bar, sit me on the table whilst the people ordered. Those were the good old days, I grew up there, polishing glasses; pulling a pint and getting most of it all over me. My mother was so mad as I stunk of beer and the customers thought I was drunk. She was a lovely woman."

Catherine smiled and nodded at the newcomer. She'd read her personnel file, quickly but hadn't yet gotten as sense of the SCPO until now as she listened to her words. "Sounds like an interesting childhood" She said meaning it, she wondered idly if Hanson would accept the nickname of Boats or COB. traditional ones or if they'd have to come up with a new one but the Chief was speaking and Cooper knew it was rude to interrupt with such a question so she just tried to look like she knew what was going on and be supportive. Her mind its usual whirl of plans and activity.

Samantha turned to Catherine, "So you always reside in here or do you both swap shifts in the office? As COB, it'd be nice as to who I'd use as a point of contact if any of my personnel, get into any misdeamenors. I do have a few that should be on board but have failed to turn up for morning shove off parade." Shove off means that when a boat leaves, they are shoving off. So before crew board, there would be a muster parade but Samantha personnally would call it shove off.

Catherine laughed, she couldn't help it. "No I don't live here but it seems like it, we sort of divide things up. One half of the day come bug me, other half go bug the Chief. We've our shifts then we're on call. In the normal course of things, aye I'm the one you'd come to first even if I'm not on duty if its routine if needs be but if something happens and the Chief's on duty well she needs to know. Clear as mud? And who are we missing?" She asked. Her words flowed quickly but weren't rapid fire, she was trying to slow down. She walked over to a console and called up her personnel lists crossing it with who had not checked in.

"I summoned Summers here as well," Camila said. "Has anyone seen her lately? She can catch up when she gets here. Lieutenant Cooper, I want the Security patrols of the ship stepped up because we're going after Consortium ships and if anyone manages to get aboard, I want them taken into custody immediately if they aren't authorized to be here. Hanson, I need a full list of personnel that came aboard recently from Unity as well as any supplies that need to be checked through Security."

Samantha pulled up a list on her PADD and cross referenced with Catherine's list, "Oh you're far too organised, that there, that over there, that up there....right err, her, him, him, him errr, her *checks the PADD* yea, he wont be coming along, he was fighting.....he's being carried....still drunk which involves his mates that are sober. Francis, you picked him up at cargo bay two. Annnnddd, those seven, I've seen; I've tasked base security to pick the others up when they see them or track their movements in case they haven't come at all." Samantha briefed. She never knew that there was someone more organised than she was. Samantha was very organised once but as she got older, it all turned into, ahhh to hell with it which made her smile.

"Yes you definitely reside here. But if I catch you anywhere, I'll be sure to bring the criminal with me...by the feet." Samantha smiled jokingly.

"Thank you," Camila said. "We just can't afford to take any chances right now. I see that you're listed as Tactical, Chief. We have a spot open on Beta shift for that unless you have a preference. I see that you're also listed as the Chief of the Boat."

"Yes I'll take any shift and if you want to move me about then just holla....I'll be up." Samantha thought that if she starts out as a team player right from the beginning, both officers would see her as reliable and flexible to their needs. Being a ships COB isn't really a time consuming job but being flexible and getting about the ship and amongst her enlisted personnel, enables her to fulfil her responsibility and better serve the other departments.

"Well that sorts that, I've made the patrol changes Chief..." She waved a PADD then hoped up on a chair to sit crossed legged as she tapped into her ever present PADD. She looked at the both of them as they looked at her, she pointed at Camila, "My Chief, you can be COB unless you've a better idea..." Thinks to self, "Like corn on the cob..damn now I want corn with butter, hmmm melty, melty butter..wait where was I..oh yeah..." Tries not to snicker at the odd mental image of the Chief of the Boat covered in corn, wrestles her brain into submission then focuses, continuing out loud, "I'm concerned, Computer location of Lt. Summers?"

Samantha smiled as the nickname has been around for hundreds of years and nodded in agreement.

"Lieutenant Summers is currently in training facility one." The computer replied.

"Cooper, you need help," Camila said. "Anyway, make sure that everything is in top shape and report anything suspicious right away."

"Can do Boss..." Even as she wondered what did she do now, mentally shrugging. "I'll brief Lt. Summers if its not vital she be here just now?" She asked her Chief.

"That works," Camila said. "I'm going to call a meeting for everyone soon."

"Sounds like a plan Boss" Cooper said still tapping away on her PADD.

Samantha thought she'd better get a better view on her shift, "Lieutenant, ma'am, now I'd know that on shift would be the patrolling of critical areas like the armoury, engineering, computer core, torpedo control, bridge. Are there any other checks or critical areas that would be of interest?"

"Is everything else covered, Cooper?" Camila asked.

Cooper nodded, "Aye Ma'am pretty much anything that could cripple the ship or our ability to retake has at least a few personnel nearby at all times...." An idea popped in her brain as it often does, randomly, "Hey at the first trigger of phaser fire can we rig force fields to pop up automatically around the most vital areas? Modified by authorized personnel obviously..."

"We already have those protocols in place, Cooper," Camila said. "I gave you the list already." She paused. "Or was that not part of it?"

Cooper looked thoughtful, "No your right, we're on the ball. Sorry there's so many ideas in here..." She tapped at her own head, "Sometimes I'm not sure if I did something about it or just thought about it..." She joked and continued working.

"Might I suggest that we confirm that these systems are working? I wouldn't want them not to work or work incorrectly because some Consortium agent infiltrated the system, let alone any other system." Samantha suggested.''

"Get on that, Cooper," Camila said. "I'll be calling a full Security briefing in thirty minutes. Dismissed."

"Can do Chief, I'll run some tests." Cooper replied.

"Since there's more enlisted personnel, I will get some combat training done because you're going to need every species to hold the ship. If we ever get boarded that is." Samantha said.

"Get Cooper a schedule for that, Hanson," Camila said. "Anything else?"

Samantha thought and asked, "May we run a training drill for recapturing control of the ship?"

"Get with Cooper about that, too," Camila said. "Dismissed."

Samantha thought of a training schedule off the top of her head but she didn't have a whole lot of time to keep re-running a training package. The holodeck might be good for this, an engineering department versus a science or versus the red shirts. Something to ponder on but ponder very quickly. Samantha got up and headed out.

"No rest for the wicked or weary eh Chief?" She quipped and an off handed salute she headed off to get things done.

"You're conducting the training for the officers.....HA!" Samantha joked and continued.
