Joey/Kaylee

1,340 words; about a 7 minute read

Mission: Risky Business
Location: Talon's
Timeline: MD 2 || 1330 Hours

With her shift over, Joey found herself sitting at the bar in Talon's trailing her finger over the rim of a half empty glass of cognac. This seemed to be her go to place when she needed to unwind before jumping into off-duty shenanigans. She was still partially in uniform sans the jacket that would have made it complete, and even had her utility belt around her waist. Her combadge was still clipped to the left side of her shirt in the event she was needed for anything, but the likelihood of that was slim. The next shift was already settled in and could handle just about anything that was thrown their way unless Consortium tried to board the ship, then it was likely to be all hands on deck. She found herself hoping that wasn't going to happen, though. At least, not until she finished her drink.

She brought the glass to her lips and took a sip, savoring the burn of the alcohol as it moved down the back of her throat. One drink is all she planned to allow herself. It was best if she kept her wits about her just in case, but even then, it'd take much more before she was stumbling all over the place. One thing she was not, was a lightweight when it came to drinking, but she never drank to excess.

A young blonde woman came into the lounge, slightly dirty, she gazed around the room, noticing the waiter nearby and ordered herself some Dinner, as she waited she looked around at the semi filled lounge that she heard many of the ships crew mention was pretty good to eat at but considering its the only place to eat, it worked out well.

Joey glanced toward the newcomer and took in her appearance. She wasn't really the judgmental sort, so she shrugged it off as a rough day. After taking another sip of her drink, she set the glass down once more and turned around to get a better look at the room around her. There seemed to be a few more people present now than there was the evening before. It actually surprised her that real booze didn't draw people in in droves, but then again, she didn't spend her every waking moment in Talon's. Chances were hundreds of people moved in and out during the day.

Being served her food, she looked around for a place to sit down and though there were several empty seats, she was still new to the ship so she figured it best to get to know the crew, so she took in each person and decided to walk up to one. "Excuse me, sir, mind if I sit?, I hate eating alone." She asked the brown haired woman before her.

Turning her attention to Kaylee when she addressed her, she gestured for her to take one of the empty seats on either side of her. "Sit away."

"Thank you, sir." Kaylee said sitting down. "Name is Kaylee Williams, Assist Engineer, you are?" She asked as she took a bite of her burger.

"You're welcome. I'm Lieutenant Joelle Corwin, Chief K9 Officer and Security Investigations Officer," The brunette woman replied before turning around once again to finish off her drink. When she was offered another, she raised a hand to stop the bartender and shook her head. "Please, no more with the 'sir'."

"Protocol, sir. Where is your mut, sir?" Kaylee asked curiously as she took another bite of her burger.

"If you're referring to my canine partner, then he is currently taking it easy," Joey replied, turning her head to the side to look at Kaylee. "And he is not a mutt. He's a pure bred German Shepherd."

"Yeah, Mutt. Marines called them dogs, Mutts, and Thorn in our sides. So don't get me wrong I am an animal person like anyone else. Just dogs tend to bark and when not trained right, they get people killed due to that barking, sir." Kaylee said munching more on her food.

"I assure you Rico comes highly trained, which continues daily, and has never gotten anyone killed in the two years I have had him, nor will he for the foreseeable future. Perhaps, you should stick to what you know, and not try to get into matters you have no business being in," The taller woman commented. "And Marine or not, he is not a mutt."

"I suggest giving him talking to the Captain, to give him an honorary rank that is at least a rank above you and everyone else. Marines do this to ensure the dog is given the respect of an officer at all times and ensures that if harms the dog then they suffer the same penalties that anyone else would if they struck an officer. Also suggest training him in SAR if he isnt trained already, also bomb detection though if hes security he probably is trained for Bomb detection already. Just a lowly ex marines opinion. As for my knowledge, that is quite vast across multiple subjects, sir. Explosives, Engineering, programming, then their is how to build bridges while under fire, how to sap enemy structures, then my combat capabilities. Then there is history, military history, besides that I can make a mean burger out of mostly any kind of meat. What subject would you like to discuss, sir?" Kaylee said giving a disarming half smile.

"Rico is already a recognized Starfleet Officer, so there's no need for me to go to the Captain about getting him any kind of honorary rank. He is Starfleet, and deserves just as much respect as anyone else wearing the uniform does. As far as SAR training goes, he and I are both SAR trained. While I'm sure you mean no harm with what you've been saying, I think it might be best if you stop making suggestions. He's just as qualified as a lot of Starfleet personnel, if not more so." Joey was trying really hard to keep her cool, but one thing she didn't appreciate was having someone she'd only known for five minutes coming at her and making suggestions about things they really didn't know a lot about. "And again... don't call me sir. I'm not on duty."

"I still know more, and Arrogance and 'know it all' will get people killed, and your security, which is a worse doubled edged sword, you cant afford to be arrogant nor a 'know it all'. Excuse me, Sir. I have a power fluctuation to repair before the ship explodes. I suggest seeing a counselor for that quick temper of yours over a simple conversation." Kaylee said smiling as she got up and took a drink before giving it back to the waiter as she headed for the door.

Joey blinked, then turned her attention to the blonde as she walked for the door. She had the nerve to sit there and accuse her of being the know it all? She turned back to the bartender and gestured for another drink. One more wouldn't hurt. It was either that, or get up from where she was currently sitting and drive Kaylee's head through a bulkhead. Sure, it'd make her feel a hell of a lot better, but would likely land her in the brig, and that wouldn't do her any good. Her only option presently was to have another drink and count to ten as many times as it took to get her building anger under control.

See a counselor... The brunette woman scoffed and shook her head. If anyone required that, she was already out the door. Her anger continued to build the longer she sat there. Leaving the drink untouched, Joey got to her feet and walked out of Talon's. Something had to be done before she exploded, and that something was going to come in the form of a gym. She needed to channel her anger, and force it into something positive.
