Jessa had read through a full two chapters of the book, using silly voices for Mr. Dursley and the snake at the zoo- which made Serran giggle. She was just starting to wonder if they would have to go find something to eat later when their was a hissing sound from the doors and slowly, they inched open.

“Father!” exclaimed Serran, jumping up and running directly to the Vulcan standing in the doorway.

Salek reached down and rested a hand on his son's head. “Have you been on your best behaviour for Miss Meri?” he asked.

Serran nodded.

Salek looked over to Jessa, still seated on the floor with Neville. “I have brought food,” he said, reaching down to pick up a rather large black ration box. “Replicators are not yet operational, however, all the food in stasis pods in Talons must be eaten before it spoils. There are sandwiches, oranges and carrots and water. I trust it will be enough.”

“Oh, absolutely,” said Jessa gratefully as she stood and crossed to Salek and Serran. “Thank you so much.”

Salek handed the ration box over to Jessa and turned to his son. “You must stay here with Miss Meri,” he said.

Serran shook his head.

“Serran,” said Salek sternly and Serran's little shoulders slouched, but he took hold of Jessa's free hand. “I am on my way to Sick Bay to attempt to get emergency power to them. I will inform your sister that you are uninjured.”

“Thank you,” Jessa said. “We had a couple of minor cuts, but it was nothing I couldn't take care of. I think we've got some bruises, too, but they can wait.”

Salek nodded once. “I will come back as soon as I can,” he said. “In the meantime, stay here.

“Excuse me, sir,” said Neville from behind Jessa. “You're in engineering, aren't you?”

“Yes,” answered Salek.

“Do you know what's happened to my dad?” Neville asked, looking slightly worried. “Lieutenant Stafford?”

“He is fine,” answered Salek. “He is still in engineering, working on repairs. I will inform him that you are unharmed as well.”

Neville sighed in relief and grinned. “Thank you, sir,” he said.

Salek gave the boy a single nod. “Is there anything else you require?” he asked Jessa.

“Not that I can think of,” she answered. “We were just reading Harry Potter. Oh, have you got a spare handlight? In case the one we've been reading by runs out?”

Salek reached into his tool kit, pulled one out and handed it to her.

“Thank you,” she said for the third time. “Okay, boys, let's read some more of our book and then when we're hungry, we can eat. Sound good?”

“Can I read some of it?” Neville asked.

“Absolutely,” said Jessa, taking the ration box to her desk and picking up the book. “Here's right where we left off: Chapter Three.”

“The Letters from No One,” read Neville.

The three settled onto the floor, Serran crawling into Jessa's lap this time and Neville began to read.

Salek forced the doors most of the way closed before heading towards Sick Bay, knowing that Miss Meri would look after his son better than he could right now.
